GETTING AROUND THE REGGIO EMILIA AREA BY BICYCLE

Using your bicycle for work, play and health

Using your bicycle for work, play and healthAlthough more young and elderly people currently use bicycles on a daily basis, other people are discovering the convenience of getting to and from work by bicycle.

In the city, a bicycle is a flexible and competitive means of transportation for short commutes, light shopping, reaching the old city center and for multiple trips; that is, wherever cars and public transit have distinct limitations.

In many urban centers, cities are providing bicyclists and pedestrians with networks of paths offering an alternative to motorized traffic. Once bicycle paths were a low priority. They were built in disconnected sections and not fully suited to their intended use.

More recently, the design and construction of quality bicycle paths has grown, even if they are still subordinate to the needs of automobile traffic and the restrictions imposed by limited financial commitments.

To promote a sustainable model of mobility that represents an alternative to one exclusively based on the use of passenger cars, single bicycle paths are not enough. Instead a system of safe bicycle paths must be integrated with other forms of transportation, and must include dedicated services and facilities.
